OBJECTIVE & COMPONENT
-
Objective: Students will learn about different animals and how they move, using their bodies to mimic these movements through dance.
-
Competency: Students will be able to recognize various animals and demonstrate understanding by replicating their movements in a creative dance form.
Plan (Activity):
-
Introduction (5 minutes): Begin with a short interactive story about a journey through a jungle, introducing animals they will mimic, such as a monkey, a snake, a frog, and an elephant.
Ms. Ale gathers the class around and begins,
"Today, we're going on a jungle adventure right here in our classroom. Let's see who we can find!"
"First, we spot a playful monkey swinging from tree to tree. He jumps and swings with lots of energy. Can you move like the monkey?" Ms. Ale asks, as the children mimic swinging arms.
Next, she whispers, "Look, there's a smooth-slithering snake on the jungle floor. Let’s slither silently just like it." The children pretend to glide across the floor.
"Over by the pond, frogs are hopping. Let’s hop and ribbit like them," she continues, and the children hop around, giggling.
Finally, she stomps softly, saying, "Here comes a big, gentle elephant, stomping but careful. Let's stomp our feet like the elephant."
Ms. Ale claps her hands and exclaims, "Great job, everyone! Are you ready to dance like our jungle friends?"
-
Warm-Up (5 minutes): Use a fun, animal-themed song for a warm-up that includes stretching and basic movements like crawling, jumping, and slithering.
Main Activity - Animal Dance Safari (15 minutes):
-
Beginning (5 minutes):
-
Gather students in a circle and ask them to mimic an animal:
-
Monkey: Swinging arms and jumping
-
Snake: Slithering movements on the floor
-
Frog: Crouching and hopping
-
Elephant: Stomping and swinging arms like a trunk
-
-
-
Middle (5 minutes): Play a variety of music styles and ask students to choose which animal they want to be, dancing to the music as they imagine that animal would.
-
End (5 minutes): Form a circle, and let each student perform their favorite animal dance while the others guess the animal.
-
Cool Down (5 minutes): Lead the class in slow, gentle movements such as stretching like a cat or curling up like a sleeping bear.
Assessment (3 minutes):
-
Informally observe and provide verbal feedback during the "Animal Dance Safari" to assess each student’s ability to link animal characteristics with movements.
Homework:
-
Ask students to create a simple mask at home representing their favorite animal from the class. They should be prepared to wear it and perform the corresponding dance move in the next class.
